By the 1970's Canterbury were supplying kit to so many teams that its factories were left with a problem: what to do with so many remnants of fabric? The solution: stitch them together and market them as 'practice jerseys'. With no two items the same, the shorts became known as Uglies and were embraced by both players and fans.
